After a string of diplomatic disasters in Libya and Syria, leave it to the Obama administration to come up with a whole new way to bungle foreign affairs. Enter “hashtag diplomacy,” which apparently now is a thing.
It all started on March 26th, when State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki sent the following tweet in support of President Obama’s pro-Ukraine remarks made earlier that day:
To echo @BarackObama today-proud to stand #UnitedForUkraine World should stand together with one voice pic.twitter.com/VeMt578UdY
— Jen Psaki (@statedeptspox) March 26, 2014
With this tweet, the Twitter hashtag #UnitedForUkraine was born, showing the world how effectively this “social media savvy” administration leverages networks like Twitter to achieve its foreign policy objectives.
Until a few days ago, when the Russian Foreign Ministry hijacked the State Department’s own #UnitedForUkraine hashtag, and used it to taunt the US and President Obama over the standoff in Ukraine:
Russia surprised by US, Ukraine misinterpreting Geneva agreement http://t.co/UbNnfxkbmS #UnitedForUkraine
— MFA Russia (@mfa_russia) April 23, 2014
#Lavrov: Few analysts doubt that Ukraine has been exploited as a pawn in a geopolitical game #UnitedForUkraine
— MFA Russia (@mfa_russia) April 24, 2014
#Lavrov: I expect that Putin’s proposal to begin consultations with all the interested parties will soon find support #UnitedForUkraine — MFA Russia (@mfa_russia) April 24, 2014
#Lavrov: The Ukrainians must, without any external interference, decide their own fate and strengthen their statehood #UnitedForUkraine — MFA Russia (@mfa_russia) April 24, 2014
Not to be outdone, State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki sent this legendary tweet in response, further reinforcing President Obama’s image as a strong leader who is tough on Russia and tough on Russian President Vladimir Putin:
The world stands #UnitedforUkraine. Let’s hope that the #Kremlin & @mfa_russia will live by the promise of hashtag
— Jen Psaki (@statedeptspox) April 24, 2014
Yes, you read that correctly. That was the State Department attempting to scold Russia for not living “by the promise of hashtag.” Needless to say, Twitter users were not impressed. What followed next was an epic amount of mockery aimed squarely at Jen Psaki:
@statedeptspox @mfa_russia LIVE BY THE PROMISE OF A HASHTAG? #FightingWords #NoAllowance4Vladdy
— Sandy (@RightGlockMom) April 24, 2014
@statedeptspox @mfa_russia Is this a joke account?

As if things couldn’t get worse for Mrs. Psaki, Fox News correspondent Ed Henry asked the State Department spokesperson about her dubious tweet during a press conference today. Her response was as follows:
Here is a direct quote of what she said to Ed Henry:
I was highlighting the fact that they have not been following their hashtag with action.
No, no, no. You did not just say that. Dammit.
Twitter users were equally displeased with her comments:
“They have not been following up their hash tag with actions.” – Jen Psaki on Russian militarism… I’m turning red with embarrassment. — Noah Rothman (@NoahCRothman) April 25, 2014

“Most embarrassing administration evah.” Sadly, I could not agree more. If this is us hitting the reset button on our relations with Russia, then I’d officially like to hit the eject button on this administration. I guarantee you that won’t get lost in translation.
